Sandy Point

Overview

Sandy Point is small coastal community situated at the entrance of a narrow peninsula that fronts both Waratah Bay and Shallow Inlet.

A long curve of magnificent ocean beach with a backdrop of Wilsons Promontory to the south characterises the township of Sandy Point.

On the foreshore is the dramatic Waratah Beach Surf Life Saving Club building, with its curving brick walls and roofline.

The commercial centre of Sandy Point features a cafe, general store, mini golf facility and real estate office on Beach Parade, which is separated from the beach by the row of sand dunes.

History

The Bratowooloong people of the Gunai nation lived in the area before European settlement. Sealers and whalers visited the area in the first half of the nineteenth century. However, it wasn't until the 1860s that the area was settled by cattle farmers.

The arrival of the Gippsland Railway improved the viability of local farms and made dairy farming in the area. ??The Post Office opened on 2 September 1926, and was closed in 1994.
