Archies Creek

Overview

Archies Creek is a tiny town located 125 kilometres from Melbourne in the Bass Coast Shire, north-west of Wonthaggi. A milk processing town for most of its history it still retains all its factory buildings and warehouses which are now used by various other businesses. The quaint Royal Mail Hotel established in 1902 is home to possibly the smallest bar in Australia.  The town is set on a steep hill leading into a creek valley and is surrounded by hilly agricultural land.  It still has a real country hamlet feel.

History

A small settlement predated the first dairy factory ‘The Melbourne Chilled Butter Factory which was established in 1896. The Post Office opened on 17 November 1899 and the original hall and hotel were built in the early 1900s. Set each side of the road leading down into the Archie’s Creek valley the town, surrounded by rich agricultural land has been home to significant milk processing operations until 1983.  Part of the factory complex was used by the Shire of Bass until Council amalgamations in 1996.
